My formula for success has three legs of support. Over the years, I have discovered success is powered by three things: know-how, reputation and a network of contacts.
The formula for success = your human capital (what you know) times your social/relationship capital (who you know) times your reputation (who trusts you).
You can take away all my money and even my customer list, but if I can keep my smarts, my business relationships and reputation, I'll get it all back and then some. Having knowledge, social capital and trust is the ultimate security blanket in good times and bad.
Being selective as to who we let into our social networks matters as we retain the ability of instantly collaborating with many people across time zones and borders. The foundation of network technology is how the people we connect with think about the collaboration process. Social networks that are built on the "law of reciprocity" (
www.LawofReciprocity.com) flourish. Those networks that violate the law of reciprocity die.
What are you doing to improve your social/relationship capital?
